Spring 2024
Atlantis Awakens at Victoria Park
As the clock struck 6:00, VPCI students slowly flooded Parkview Manor, where the semi-formal was located.
February 15th marked the second semi-formal since Covid-19. However, the gears behind the dance had been set in motion by Victoria Park’s SLC since November last year. Activities such as fundraisers and theme elections were held many weeks before the dance. Due to their hard work, the event was very successful, with participants enjoying the night with lots of dancing and activities.
Before the event began, SLC members were excused from school in preparation for the exciting night ahead. They meticulously placed decorations such as balloons and jellyfish around the ballroom and prepared the venue to accommodate all the attendees.
As the clock struck 6:00, VPCI students slowly flooded Parkview Manor, where the semi-formal was located. They were ushered into the reception area and asked to line up to sign in and hang their coats. Attendees used this time to marvel at each other's outfits, with many dressed in blues and purples, fitting the theme of Atlantis Awakens. Not long after, the doors to the ballroom opened, and students seated themselves at their respective tables.
Before festivities could begin, the MCs introduced themselves and teased what the night would have in store. Ahmad, Sara, Haodong, and Naomi engaged participants in activities such as Simon Says and Musical Chairs. After that, dinner was to be served. The meal consisted of pasta in a plum tomato and basil sauce, garden and caesar salad, grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, and was finished off with an ice cream sundae.
After dinner, the real party began. Attendees were invited to the dance floor and to enjoy the festivities. The dance started off with lots of rap and hip-hop songs, including artists like Drake and Jay-Z. As the night progressed, the music slowly evolved into classic 2010s pop, with staples such as Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson and Last Friday Night by Katy Perry being played. Students danced the night away until it finally came to an end.
Overall, the semi-formal was very successful due to the hard work and dedication of our Student Council members. However, the process was not without challenges. Emily, the grade 10 representative, explained that there was trouble with getting tasks completed on time and a lack of communication at times due to exams and winter break. Despite these obstacles, SLC managed to pull through and produced a stellar night for all the attendees. In fact, they have many more events planned, one example being the upcoming Club’s Food Fair. Stay tuned for more announcements, and be ready to show off your school spirit!
