ATHLETIC AFFAIRS AT VICTORIA PARK, VOL 4

With the arrival of the vernal equinox, the winter sporting season has come to a close, but there are still plenty of athletic achievements to celebrate from the past few months. In this transition period from winter to spring, it’s time to recap the results of the girls’ volleyball, boys’ basketball, and swim seasons. Moving forward, we’ll see the formation of new spring teams and follow the ongoing progress of the badminton and cricket teams.

WINTER WRAP-UP

After racking up three wins and three losses during the tail end of 2023, the senior girls’ volleyball team came back in the new year with a vengeance. They won games against both Don Mills and George S Henry, qualifying them for regional playoffs. Unfortunately, they were knocked out in quarterfinals by a 2-0 loss against John Polanyi.

The junior volleyball players attained a similar level of success, ending the regular season with a 2-0 loss against John Polanyi. Luckily, the girls had enough wins to secure a spot in regional quarterfinals. They ended the season at this stage, stepping out with a 2-0 defeat against the first seed, York Mills.

The junior boys’ basketball team experienced a similar loss against York Mills, ending the first game of 2024 with a score of 64-46. They proceeded to score a 67-62 victory against George S Henry. In their final game of the season, the boys put up a valiant effort against Earl Haig, eventually losing 65-45.

The senior boys, meanwhile, played the same lineup of schools. They ended their game against York Mills down just five points, with a final score of 55-50. Next, they were defeated by George S Henry, 78-58. In the last game of the season, the seniors went out with a bang, bagging a win against Earl Haig. Final score, 51-41.

Finally, the swim team had an explosive season, with several team members qualifying for city championships and eventually, OFSAA. At the competition held in early March, a handful of our swimmers placed within the top twenty times in the entire province, re-cementing VP’s successful swimming record.

SPRING-START UP

Meanwhile, the badminton team is continuing to practice and play hard. After recently playing several successful matches against other schools, they are gearing up for the culmination of the season in May, which will conclude a months-long journey that began at badminton tryouts in October.

The VP cricket team is also hitting the ground running, after playing a tournament for the first time in a while against two Leaside teams. They played Leaside Team B and emerged victorious by a margin of 4 wickets, while their game against Leaside Team A resulted in a loss by the same amount.

Next up, tryouts for boys’ rugby 15s, track and field, water polo, and ultimate frisbee are ongoing, with games expected to begin in April and May. The girls’ soccer team has also been restarted after a several-year hiatus, attracting a high volume of interested players. We look forward to seeing these athletes compete, as their hard work will undoubtedly pay off on the field, in the pool, and on the track.
