Have you ever wondered about what all the students rushing into the hallway behind the cafeteria in the mornings and after-school are up to? Those are the dedicated musicians of VP, who have been busily preparing for the annual Winter Music Night (WMN) since the beginning of this school year.

Winter Music Night is one of the best and most anticipated events at Victoria Park. It is an opportunity for friends, family, and students to enjoy the wonderful music showcased by the multi-talented members of the student body.

Kathleen Liang, the Stage Crew Manager of Music Council, told us, “This Winter Music Night, there will be a new video that will showcase the music program. It will feature the various ensembles and people of VP Music. Also, the ensembles have been practicing new pieces in preparation for this event, and I am sure the audience will enjoy listening to them! 4 of the ensembles went to Nationals last year, so the night will be filled with amazing music.”

The music program is home to 5 very skilled ensembles, each with a unique sound. They include Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, and Chamber Choir. Out of these 5 groups, 4 went to the MusicFest Canada Competition last year at the national level. You can definitely expect various types of music repertoire to be performed, ranging from Christmas classics, exciting jazz pieces, classical tunes, and contemporary pieces.

The Media Representative of the Music Council, Milica Mijalkovic, has informed us of another exciting component of WMN. “One way we like to incorporate students, family, and friends into the evening is through our raffle. Traditionally, we offer great raffle prizes such as gift cards or rewarding prizes and this year is no different.” Last year, the raffle winners took home Raptors tickets, gift cards, and other great prizes. We can look forward to the awesome and mysterious prizes this year as well.

Yara Radwan, a Grade 11 VP music student said, “As a music student, what I look forward to the most is Winter Music Night. This is one of the only events where I, alongside my many musical peers, am finally given the opportunity to showcase the music that we all have worked tirelessly to perfect. Winter Music Night is where we demonstrate what happens when hard work, passion, and a love for music come together, and the result of it is always a spectacular night that takes everyone’s breath away. I would encourage anyone to attend this night to truly recognize the spirit of VP’s excellent music program and what we are capable of achieving.”

Take out your agendas and save the date, VP! This year’s Winter Music Night falls on the last Thursday before the holidays begin, which is Thursday, December 21. It is guaranteed to be a fantabulous night!
