The gLoves campaign was a newly implemented fundraiser at our school. Its purpose was to raise money to purchase winter apparel for the less fortunate in hopes to prevent hypothermia. This campaign was thoroughly organized by the hard-working and passionately dedicated Verna Guan. She was willing to sit down and chat with me about the results of the fundraiser.

Nadeya Alli: “What is the gLoves campaign? What was your motive for the campaign?”

Verna Guan: “The gLoves campaign is a campaign that is dedicated to help prevent hypothermia for people in Scarborough. To help raise money, we held a raffle called “25 for 25” throughout the school. One raffle ticket entered you for a chance to win a $25 gift card! The results were fantastic and ACSA, the charity we supported, was very happy with the amount of money.”

NA: “What inspired you to come up with such a worthwhile cause?”

VG: “I was inspired by all the people in the neighbourhood who were freezing because of the cold weather outside. I wanted to do something in my community that can change lives first-hand. I felt that implementing such a campaign could really make a difference.”

NA: “What would you say was most rewarding after working so tirelessly on this initiative?”

VG: “The most rewarding part was when we finally handed the money over to ACSA. When I saw all their smiling faces, it automatically brightened my mood. I felt as if all my hard work paid off. I felt that it was possible to make a change, if you just put your mind to it.”

NA:What encouraged you to start volunteering and making a difference?”

VG: “I began volunteering because I felt like I needed to give back. I know many people who do not have what I have, so volunteering makes me feel better!”

NA: “What is your advice to youth who aspire to make a difference in the world, but do not know how to start?”

VG: “My advice to people who are trying to start a cause is to tell as many people as you can about your idea. The more support you have from other people, the better! At first it may seem challenging, but once you focus on your goal, your end result will be far more satisfying.”

It is always very rewarding giving back to your community through a worthwhile cause. It really does evoke a sense of empathy in oneself. Through such a campaign, Verna and her volunteers were able to feel such a satisfying emotion with the fundraiser’s success! Through this, we see that even a seemingly small act can make a difference in the world.
