On the surface, Mr. Lees appears to be just another math teacher. This month, I had the pleasure of interviewing him.

Chandrika A.: Tell me something interesting about yourself.

Mr. Lee: Well. I have two kids, a boy and a girl. Apart from teaching, I also play the piano and guitar. Currently, I’m in the process of creating a backyard rink. But, with the weather acting up, it’s proving a bit difficult.CA: What do you teach?

ML: I teach Math, Science and Computer science. I teach the Grade 9 and 10 students here.

CA: What do you do for fun?

ML: At school, I supervise the environmental club. I also do homework clubs at different schools, and provide math help. Outside of school, I love to watch hockey! And I also play basketball, volleyball, and baseball. I’m a handy man around the house—I like to fix things. I’m also very interested in music. My favourites are The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and U2 to name a few. I definitely like listening to old music.

CA: What expectations do you have of your students?

ML: Like any other teacher, I expect my students to try their best. Personally, I expect them to be respectful. A person’s attitude towards life can tell so much about them.

CA: Why do you teach?

ML: Good question. I enjoy working as a teacher. It’s nice to know you can impact a person’s life positively by just teaching them something.

CA: What do you think of VP?

ML: After being here a couple of times already, I think it’s a great school. There’s a lot of diversity in this school, and it’s what makes VP unique. You see people from all sorts of places interact. Also, it has a vibrant extracurricular scene—there’s something for everyone. The staff and students are great to be around with.

Sadly, VP students, Mr. Lees won’t be with us next year. But for now, if you see him in the hall, wave! Talk about sports, old music, and take the chance to learn more about an extraordinary math teacher at VP.
